Cell Phones in the classroom

Cell phones have been a problem in middle schools and high schools. Alabama is working on a solution. Instead of banning cell phone use they are looking at ways to use them in the classroom as research tools....way to go Alabama.
What do you think?

I recently read where a pastor encouraged his youth to text him during the sermon about questions they might have. It was a positive experience. Although I am not a proponent of cell phones in school, shy/insecure students could text the teacher if there is something they don't understand. This way the teacher could give immediate response and the student would not feel intimidated.

I wouldn't support this at this time. Most cell phones have cameras. Our sweet little darlings take inappropriate pictures and pass them around. Plus they cyber-bully each other through text messages.

I am a little leary about texting with my students however I do allow students to email me at my school email address. I think that we need to find ways to utilize the technology students have access to so they can be seen as "educational tools" instead of something that students need to hide or it will be confiscated by administration. I think if students were allowed to use cell phones for "educational" purpose there would be less classroom management issues when it comes to students using them when they are not supposed to. I am interested in what other teachers do in their classrooms with cell phones and mp3 players to make it educational and less of a problem.

Cell phones are another indication of issues of relevance. Why is it that kids have to "power down" to behave acceptibly in school? There must be a way for us to use these tools for what we believe to be important.

here is an interesting video on "are you relevant?"

Did you see the message about NCSD's intent to use AlertNow as a communication tool for students and parents in case of emergency? This is just one more reason why cellphones are relevant for our students and for all of us.
